Collector’s Edition: Jonathan LeVine

In this series, “Collector’s Edition,” we ask people about their personal art collections—from the first piece of art they ever bought to what they want to acquire next. Last time we spoke to Al Moran, and this time we reached out to Jonathan LeVine, founder of Jonathan LeVine Gallery, which is committed to cutting-edge art and challenges the notions of high and low.

Continue reading to learn about what Jonathan collects.

What was the first piece of art you bought or acquired?

Two Frank Kozik prints from CBGB’s gallery in 1994. One of the prints was for a band called Surgery and the other for a band called The Super Suckers. I still own them today and they hang in my house.

What art do you have in your personal collection now?

I mostly own artists I represent or have worked with in the past. My collection consists of Ron English, Shepard Fairey, Camille Rose Garcia, Jim Houser, Mark Ryden, Tim Biskup, Brett Amory, POSE, Dave Cooper, Shag, Dalek, The Date Farmers, Faile, AJ Fosik, Gary Baseman, Souther Salazar, and this is to name just a few.

What is your favorite piece in your collection?

That is a hard question to answer. I love all the work I own. A few are: an original stencil from Shepard Fairey of Andre the Giant from 1996, a portrait of myself by Ron English with his son Mars looking out of the top of my head when he was just an infant, and those Frank Kozik prints still hold the test of time for me.

What art would you like to add to your collection?

More art by the artists I represent, although I wouldn’t mind owning pieces by Kaws, Barry McGee, Os Gemeos, Lisa Yuskavage, Hilary Harkness, Will Cotton, Raymond Pettibon, Frank Frazetta, Robert Crumb and Robert Williams. Oh, the list could go on and on.

Do you collect anything besides art?

I am collecting hats and toy robots at the moment.

What did you collect as a child?

Comic books, stuffed animals, porcelain clowns and records. I think I collected other things but it was a long time ago so I don’t remember.
