We are pleased to present our 35th installment of Sound Advice featuring C-Monster. This mix was lovingly crafted by C-Monster and San Suzie, the brain trust behind the arts and culture blog C-Monster.net. C-Mon, otherwise known as Carolina A. Miranda in real life, is a freelance writer based in Brooklyn, who covers a variety of important-sounding stuff. San Suzie, a.k.a. Rosa Lowinger, is an L.A.-based sculpture conservator and author of “Tropicana Nights: The Life and Times of the Legendary Cuban Night Club.” (Buy it.)

A note about the mix:
This is a tribute to all the old school (and old school-style) Latin crooners (all girls!) who inspire us to be totally fierce. We’ve baptized it, “When You Want to Bitch-Slap Someone With a Chancla.” In it, we’ve got a singer who stabbed her man (Celeste Mendoza), another who predicted her own death (Lucha Reyes), a performer who trash talks men in her lyrics (Paquita la de del Barrio) and a an entertainer who ended up homeless, then became born again (La Lupe). There are legends (Celia Cruz, Carmen Miranda, Chavela Vargas) and a coupla contemporaries (Lucrecia, Eva Ayllón). Put all these ladies together in a room and you’d have more big-hair wigs, lamé ruffles and bright nail tips than even Lady GaGa would know what to do with. Our suggestion: pick up a quality bottle of tequila or rum, then turn the stereo up to 11. Enjoy. xox, C-Mon & San Suzie
