upper playground glassware

I am totally into the new line of glassware that Upper Playground has created for their Fall 2007 houseware line. Fresh pint glasses by artists Sam Flores (above), Basco, Dora Drimalas, and Jeremy Fish. I have also noticed that there are some coffee mugs as well, so dope. You can buy it all here.
Giuliani Party Seeks $9.11 Per Person

I have to admit after 911 I liked Rudy, he made you feel safe. Flash forward to the presidential race and he is as bad as the current administration that plays the 911 card any time they need something. This week in the news, besides his phone call with his wife, RG is raising cash for his bid, and he seems to be doing it any way possible. A supporter of Rudy Giuliani's is throwing a party that aims to raise $9.11 per person for the Republican's presidential campaign. Read on...
dreamland artist's clubhouse to close its doors

From the typed hand of Mark Surface himself,
In Coney, it's a fine line between artist and carny, but the
distinction is clear: Artists apply for grants, carnys sell them 3
tries for 2 dollars. At the sign shop, we made no such judgement, our
last commission sums up our ethos:
JEMS CONEY ISLAND - FREESTYLE CDs AND BETTY BOOP COLLECTIBLES. Painting
that sign is God's work, we are just his/her servants. Besides great
clients, working in Coney has had amazing benefits; They know us at
Totonnos Pizza and the Wonder Wheel, and SPO has the #3 score on the
Monopoly pinball machine at Faber's Fascination. Still, we've been
Sugar Mountaineers long enough, its time to go home, back to where we
came from, that little island called Manhattan.
it's not your ordinary tailor

Go toTailor. It's Friday and you need a plan for the weekend. Recently opened, Tailor, is run by Sam Mason, a former pastry chef at wd-50. The restaurant opened in August, which means it has had time to settle, normally when you go to a restaurant in the first month you end up hating it because they cannot get their act together. If you're looking for exotic sweet combinations this could be your spot, for starters try the Blood & Sand, a sort "scotch Manhattan" topped with bitter orange foam. Their menu blends the salt and sweet, such as the miso-butterscotch pork belly or the cocoa-dusted foie gras. Enjoy. Let us know what you think.

kid nation with gene parmesean

Gene Parmesean here with this week's review of Kid Nation. Another
heart-wrenching 3 days in Bonanza city and I'm wondering what DIDN'T happen this week? Well to start with Green didn't win their way out of the labor
class, again. They also failed to even complete the competition in the
alloted time, saving the town council from having to make the controversial
decision between more water pumps or a heated water slide (why would we need more water pumps with a water slide? it's like Bonanza City's very own hot springs!) But hey, we all can't have group members with prior pvc fitting
and plumbing experience like Greg and Wayne on Team Blue. And while they
did lead their team to victory over arch nemesis Team Red, Wayne and Greg's
success on the field didn't lead to success in Bonanza City's Town Hall.
Sorry Greg, the town council saw through all your vacant attempts at
kindness and assistance, this week's golden star (which was upped to 25 g's
from last week's 20) went to Michael. Keep those inspirational speeches
coming Mike, and Greg maybe if you spent some of your upper class pay this
week on OxyClean instead of chocolate bars people might consider you less of a goblin and vote for you to win the gold star next time. Until next week

jill greenberg's bears

First, Jill Greenberg took amazing portraits of monkeys. From these pictures blossomed a book, Monkey Portraits. Greenberg has now outdone herself by capturing live bears in her latest line of work. The quiet deadly monsters look plush and playful in their portraits. I hope that this too is made into a book.

carlo rossi: make something

Chardonnay Chandelier
I remember the first time I encountered a bottle of Carlo Rossi, I was 19 years old at a ghetto liquor store named Tick-Tock. After the first jug was bought, my friends and I created a game called "Jugs", wherein the jug was passed around in a circle, if you slept on it you were called Milk Maid and forced to chug. Those were the days, when blue tooth was what you got the morning after a bout with the vino.
Fast-forward to now, where Carlo Rossi actually has a marketing campaign. The idea behind it is to "make something", and the concept is totally cool. At first I was hesitant, but after visiting their website I was sold. What do you do with that empty jug? Make something. Pictured above is the Chardonnay Chandelier, one of five different pieces you can download specs from on the site. You can also submit your own designs to the Rossi team. A D.I.Y. / I.D. challenge to say the least. Drink up and re-use, good for the earth and great for the buzz. See the other pieces after the jump and visit Carlo Rossi for more.

go buy now: Jen Stark

The first time I encountered Jen Stark's Coriolis Effect sculpture was at the Riviera Gallery in Brooklyn. Now this piece is once again included in a solo show of hers at the Heaven Gallery in Chicago. 12" x 12" using many layers of colorful card stock, the piece is amazing. Only $1200 too. Wired has a nice write-up on her as well.

30,000 years of Art

A book of epic proportions. 30,000 years of art: The Story of Human Creativity Across Time and Space is the follow-up to Phaidon's The Art Book. Clocking in at 1,072 pages (roughly, 300 years of art per page), this is a definitive history of art and a must have. Whether or not it takes the reader up to the street renaissance is beyond me, but no matter what, it is available for pre-order through Amazon. via, coolhunting
the devil went down to prague

Devil’s Bible, a manuscript written in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlazice in Bohemia is on exhibition at the Czech National Library in Prague. This manuscript was regarded as a wonder of the world during the Middle Ages.
This manuscript is believed to have been written with the help of the devil and is also known as Codex Gigas. The invaluable piece of work, supposedly the biggest medieval book, was taken by the Swedish troops from the Prague Castle in 1648.
Its return to Prague after 359 years has been made possible after years of negotiations between the diplomats of Czech and Swedish. It is on exhibition in Prague from Sept 20 — Jan 6, as on loan from Sweden’s Royal Library in Stockholm.
Its so nice of the Sweds to allow the Czech's to display their book. You are able to take a digital tour at the Czech National Library.

every designer must have a phone

It seems these days ever rap artist/music artist has a clothing line. Now, the new thing is to have a phone. Prada, did it, Zac Posen designed something for Nokia a while back and now Armani whipped up this little gem. The Giorgio Armani-Samsung phone is a mere 10.5 mm in thickness. It will be available in selected mobile phone stores and Giorgio Armani boutiques in major European countries from November 2007, with expansion to other markets planned for 2008.
I predict we will someday be able to have multiple phones then I can decide what looks best with my Prada suit, My samsung Armani, or my Prada cellphone.
yet another music store

Amazon announced the public beta of a new service called Amazon MP3, a music download store that sells MP3 music downloads that do not include any Digital Rights Management (DRM). The MP3 formatted files are compatible with a wide range of music players, including the Apple iTunes, iPod and iPhone. Songs are priced from 89 cents to 99 cents, and albums from $5.99 to $9.99. All MP3s are encoded in 256kbps format and are now available at Amazon. Notice they needed to make sure the user knows it will work on its ipod, since that seems to be the only relevant digital music player to sell for.
lloyd hotel

Inside Design, the yearly design route through Amsterdam, this year has its base camp at the Westergas Terrein, with new design on locations throughout town. The Cultural Embassy invited a host of young professional and student designers to come up with design responses to the cultural heritage of Lloyd Hotel. On show is new work by Kiki van Eijk, who designed a room, 'viders' by Mark-Jan Meerdink for Minoldi, a sturdy outdoor bench by Wim Poppinga, an installation by Claire Fons, and lovely work by 15 students of the Sandberg Institute.
On the third platform you can find a cherry tree wood has sprung up. In it hides a big black bear.
The Event will be up until September 30th, so stop by The Grey Area and then check out some art.
A new "new" way to search the internet
![]()
In an effort to expand the abilities of online search, Amvona has launched what they call a "revolutionary" new media search engine known as Discovery, as part of the Amvona 720 social shopping and social networking community.
This new search engine, which is in beta status, is built on a patented and proprietary search algorithm, which allows users to have detailed control over results. Is it enough to stand out from the pack?
With Discovery, users are provided with 12 variables (8 for unregistered users) to fine-tune search results for either photos or video. These variables are presented as sliders, and users can boost or lower the influence of variables including popularity, views, category, freshness, comments, member location, and 6 others. This is intended to give each individual user complete control over their own results. For more info on Amvona read on.
interview with a hot model chick

Before today, I had no clue who Sarah McSweeney was. But now, after reading Worship Worthy's interview with her I know that:
She likes cookies for breakfast.
She has a terrible memory.
And she likes Patron.
