bored

famegame.jpg

Bored at work, why not waste the day looking busy, "doing research", playing the FameGame. FameGame rates New Yorkers' notoriety based on an "Attention Metric"*, extrapolated from "industry parties, blogs, select media institutions, and people they've been pictured with". A photo op with Forrest Whitaker (47.5%) could trump the Times profiling your Nuts4Nuts-cart empire. Blah, blah blah blah, blaahhhh. Via The Thrillist

monkey on your back

monkeybar.jpg

The Monkey Bar, that is, which soft re-launched last night.

Opened inside the Hotel Elysee in 1936 (and a favorite of Hollywood luminaries like Ava Gardner), the legendary spot shut down in March for an overhaul that would make it sleeker, hipper, less steak-y and more Asian. When you enter off 54th Street, you'll find the bar area's trademark yellow wallpaper (full of playful monkeys, elephants and tuxedoed gents) and low-riding leather armchairs intact and take a sip of a Blueberry Joes: tequila, coffee and muddled blueberry.

Monkey Bar, 60 E. 54th St (between Park and Madison), 212-838-2600, officially opens Monday

Camouflage house

camohouse.jpg

Set among shrubs and budding fir trees, this home has been encased in a façade matching the greenery around it. The concealing mesh is permeable to let the sunshine filter onto the house. But it also allows the light from inside to radiate out. Allowing the build to sit anonymously by day, but emerge discretely at night. Blurring the boundaries between what is human, and what is not. An 11-year-old Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail. Think hams as big as car tires. "It feels really good," Jamison, of Pickensville, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "It's a good accomplishment. I probably won't ever kill anything else that big."

solo faile show

FaileNYCshowcard.jpg

We were going to wait to drop this, but as the nature of the internet goes it will soon be everywhere. Beginning June 7th and lasting four days, Brooklyn-based art collective Faile will be holding a solo show in an undisclosed location. Following the tactics of Banksy last fall and employing their mutual dealer Steve Lazirides to handle the biz, "With Love and Kisses, Nothing Lasts Forever" will consist of 30 large canvases and who knows what else. With prices climbing into solid 5 figures for the work, the londoners will be swooping in to buy up everything with their strong, obnoxious currency. (so jealous). Check WoosterCollective, the Gothamist, and Faile for the location on June 6th.

After a hard fought battle, Miss Japan Riyo Mori was crowned Miss Universe 2007 by a panel of distinguished judges that included Dave Navarro and Tony Romo. While she was beautiful, my vote went to runner-up Miss Brazil who was by far Miss Universe caliber. She will always be a winnner to me

Eco friendly restuarant

cafehabana.jpg

Cafe Habana has added a new bundle of joy to the family: Habana Outpost. Located in Brooklyn. Everything you see is recycled, from the hospitable picnic tables in the garden to the old truck they have turned into a functioning kitchen. And, yes, the outpost has the same delicious grilled corn as the Nolita locations and does a mean brunch. Inside and out, Habana Outpost is an explosion of color. The atmosphere, like the food, offers the best in what they call, "traditional Latin fare with a unique Cuban and Central Mexican twist." As though the food and bright atmosphere weren't enough, the Outpost hosts a bevy of weekly activities: free movies every Sunday at 8pm, weekend markets designed to support local businesses and monthly art and design exhibits, and events for the kids. diary

dearDiary.jpg

In the preface to her new book Dear Diary, Lesley Arfin writes, “Wanna see your future? This book is my whole life, and, give or take a few ridiculous circumstances, it’s yours, too. Here’s how it goes: you grow up in Long Island. First you’re cool. Then you’re not. Everyone hates you, and you get so insecure you start suppressing emotions by giving hand jobs and inhaling whippets. Then come the bad-girl years. Sound familiar?”

Arfin’s debut tome is comprised of the author’s own diary entries from age 12 to 24, updates from her current 28-year-old perspective, and interviews with people from her past. “This is every teenage girl’s story,” Arfin explains. What follows, however, during those “bad-girl” years, is not every girl’s story – which makes “Dear Diary” irresistible to many, even if it’s written primarily for 15-year-old girls.

After discovering sex, drugs and punk rock growing up in Syosset (on Long Island), Arfin attended Hampshire College. There, her drug use took off. “I even saw a therapist during my last year of college, and she said that every time I did dope, I had to tell her. So every week, I told her I had done dope. I told her I needed it to relax, and she suggested I replace heroin with kava kava. Nice try,” Arfin writes.... Read more of this article at psychoPedia.com
